Catalogue Note

Angelica Kauffmann is known to have painted a number of allegorical figures on copper similar to this work, though the present rectangular format is rare.  The figure of Wisdom, with her sceptre and crown of glory gestures with her right hand as she steps toward the garden leading to the temple of Virtue and Happiness.
