Worked in silk and metal on linen. Signed, Naby Lords done in the 11th year of her age, may the 24th AD 1765

Condition

Very good condition; appears to retain the original black-painted frame.

Catalogue Note

Notice how the border was extended to complete the inscription Who can find a virtuous wom/ -an for her price is far above rubies. The edges of this and the preceding sampler were sewn to the pine backboards of their original frames. Abigail (Naby) Lord (1754-1821) was the elder sister of Elizabeth. She married Mundator Tracy (1749-1816) on May 4, 1786.

Naby was the second wife of Mundator Tracy.  He was described in the Norwich Packet of 1773 as "an accomplished gentleman." (Additional information provided by Carol and Stephen Huber).
