Catalogue Note

Attributed to Sarah Swan (b. 1806), the daughter of William Swan and Sarah Shephard of Dorchester. In 1833 she married bookseller Ebenezer Clapp, Jr., who wrote The History of Dorchester in 1858. No record has been found of a Miss Glover teaching in Dorchester. She may have been Eleanor (b. 1788), a daughter of Samuel Clover and Eleanor Hawes of Stoughton, who attended Day's Academy in Wrentham in 1811, and taught in Stoughton, Mansfield, and Milton. A mourning piece by Elizabeth Clapp also names Miss Clover's
School
, Dorchester (privately owned}. (Additional information provided by Carol and Stephen Huber).
