Catalogue Note
On the basis of technique, Ruth's sampler is attributed to Sarah Stivours' school in Salem. A closely related sampler was worked by ten-year-old Hannah Byrn in 1798. Ruth Briggs (c.1775-1853) was the daughter of Salem sea captain Johnson Briggs (c. 1749-1794) and Ruth Stillman (c. 1755-1801). She died unmarried.
