• gilt metal movement with English ruby cylinder escapement, plain brass balance, jewelled balance staff and escape wheels, spiral bi-metallic compensator ('Chelsea' bun compensation), bi-metal curb mounted on a platform pivoted with balance wheel, rack and pinion for mean-time adjustment, signed Fran Perigal, Bond Street, London, No 460, signed dust cover • white enamel regulator dial, roman numerals, subsidiary dial for hour indication, subsidiary seconds below, gold hands • later case hallmarked London 1804, with case maker's mark DW for Daniel Walker

Condition

The movement is running. Dial with hair cracks. Later case in nice condition.

Accompanied by the original sale receipt between Cecil Clutton and George Daniels dated 28th June 1977.

The 'chelsea bun' temperature compensator is a rare feature found on watches by such makers as Larcum Kendall, Vulliamy and Josiah Emery.

Francis Perigal was active from about 1770 to the time of his death in 1794. He was admitted as Honorary Freeman of the Clockmakers' Company in 1781 and later became Master in 1806. He was appointed watchmaker to the King in 1784.
He was succeeded in business by his son, also Francis.
