Catalogue Note
Johannes Buschmann III, was born in 1661 in Augsburg, the son of a renowned clockmaker. He travelled to London in 1690 where he changed his name to John Bushman. In 1692 John became a Freeman in the Clockmakers' Company, and then Court Assistant in 1720.
Makers in this period utilized unusual dial designs, perhaps as a means of attracting new customers.
A similar watch by John Bushman with wandering hour dial can be found in the British Museum, which has a Royal bust depicting King William III. The case is also made by John Willoughby.
David Thompson, The British Museum Watches, 2008, p. 58.
For an explanation of the wandering hour dial, see Watches, p.89-90.
