the satinwood-veneered case lined with red morocco and containing multiple original and later fittings including mirror, silver-topped jars, Jean-François Demoulins, and two cunningly-fitted trays of mainly gold-mounted ivory implements, retailer's label: Hebert / Palais Royal / Galerie de Pierre No. 58 / Et Galerie de Pierre No. 20 / coté de la rue de la Loi; another French necessaire in a tooled read leather case, comprising a mirror, a pin cushion, a pair of gold scissors (maker's mark illegible, [?]L) and a smaller pair of metal ones, a gold thimble, a gold needle case, a glass scent flacon with gold cover, three mother-of-pearl bobbins, early 19th century; and a tooled brown leather stationery case, stamped with the family coat-of-arms below a marquis's coronet
Condition
Exterior with veneer slightly buckled and centrally cracked on lid, interior extremely well-preserved and bright. Three silver-topped scent bottles, two pairs of scissors and ivory awl are later additions, otherwise 7 further gaps in trays apparently for a toothbrush, two penknives, a comb, a bodkin, a lancet and a pick. One ivory handle lacking prong. With original key.
