- oil on canvas
Provenance
Anonymous sale, Montecarlo, Sotheby's, 26 October 1981, lot 540, as circle of Bocchi, for FF 70,000.
Literature
M. Olivari, Faustino Bocchi e l'arte di figurar pigmei, Milan 1990, p. 261, cat. no. D8, as the Master of the Fertility of the Egg.
Condition
The canvas has an old relining which has become a little loose. The paint surface is secure and structurally sound, with the impasto well preserved under the yellowed varnish. There are some small losses in the lower left corner. Some of the dark background tones have become sunken in to the canvas. UV light reveals some scattered non-obtrusive retouchings and a small restored hole lower centre. The painting should clean well. Offered in a plain gilt wood frame with minor losses.
