Catalogue Note

Artist's Inscriptions:
Chatting with an old friend, we think about the years that have passed. Two old bosom friends now lack hair at the temples, and we float by these many homes on autumn waters. Though already drunk I call for more wine, and I must lean against the boat to open the bottle. Today I consider the lakes and rivers, my awareness traveling far and my heart remaining behind. Hongzhi reign, renzi year (1492), ninth month, ninth day, Mister Wang Gongyu prepares to leave, and minister Wen prepares a farewell, and because I cross Tai Lake with Gongyu I make this painting and give it to him. Shen Zhou.
Xinweiyear (1631), the ninth lunar month, a friend has brought by this authentic trace of old man Shitian for me to see, and so I write this in emulation, and append an inscription, Master Meiyin, Xiangsheng.

Note: The original Shen Zhou painting was sold at Sotheby's New York, Fine Chinese Paintings, December 5, 1985, lot 82 (illustrated on the cover).
