Paintings and Calligraphies from Dr. Meiling Luh’s Collection (Lots 710-743)

Dr. Andrew Meiling Luh (1920-2011), was born in Shanghai, China, attended Catholic schools and graduated with a medical degree from Aurora University. After graduating from the orthopedic surgery program at St. Louis University in the 1950s, Dr. Luh practiced orthopedic surgery until his retirement in 1988. Only then did he seriously begin to collect Chinese painting and calligraphy, which became his great passion. He acquired his art from diverse sources, some on trips to China, others directly from fellow Chinese emigrant acquaintances in North America. He also received many works as gifts, from friends, family members, and artists in Shanghai. In 1991, Toda Teisuke and Ogawa Hiromitsu from Tokyo University visited Dr. Luh and selected fourteen paintings from his collection to publish in their definitive catalogue titled Comprehensive Illustrated Catalog of Chinese paintings: Second Series.
