each baluster body painted around the sides with large peony and magnolia blossoms issuing from ornamental rockwork enclosed within a fence, with butterflies and insects in flight above, all above lappet borders at the foot, the neck painted with a ruyi collar suspending chrysanthemums, peonies and ribboned brocade balls, and reserved on a dense ground of cloud swirls and florets, with a keyfret border at the rim, later painted wood covers

Collection of Dom Luis Caetano de Castro e Almeida, later Count of Nova-Goa, brought to Portugal in the mid-19th century.
By descent to the current Count of Nova-Goa.

Condition

Both in general good condition. One with a 3.2cm firing crack near the shoulder; vertical copper scratches, longest measuring circa 4cm; general fritting along the foot, a 1 x 0.4cm iron spot, and other minor glaze firing imperfections such as burst glaze bubbles, grits etc. The other with general fritting and small chips to the foot, the largest area measuring 4.4 x 1cm and other glaze firing imperfections. Minor surface scratchings. The later painted wood covers are chipped at the edges.
