of compressed globular form with a straight neck and broad everted rim, supported on three splayed legs each moulded with a vertical flange, covered overall with an attractive sea-green glaze, the silver domed cover pierced with a pair of phoenix amongst foliage, Japanese wood box

Condition

The censer is in very good condition with the exception of two small glaze pulls to the edge of the rim, a small depression to the edge of the rim and some glaze rubbing to the shoulder. It should be noted that the colour is of a far deeper bluish-green tone than the catalogue illustration would suggest.

Catalogue Note

Elegantly formed after the archaic bronze vessel, li, censers of this type are characteristic of the Southern Song period and are found in a range of sizes and finishes. The present piece is notable for its crisp flanges and even lustrous glaze that pools at the shoulders to accentuate the harmonious form.

Censers of this type can be found in important museums and private collections around the world; a closely related example in the Zhejiang Provincial Museum is illustrated in Longquan Celadon of China, Hangzhou, 1998, pl. 73; two, in the Qing Court collection and still in Beijing, are published in The Complete Collection of treasures of the Palace Museum. Porcelain of the Song Dynasty (II), Hong Kong, 1996, pls 121 and 122; and a fourth example is illustrated in Celadons from the Longquan Kilns, Taipei, 1998, pl. 120. A censer of this type, from the Cunliffe collection, was sold in these rooms, 29th October 1957, lot 89; and another from the Muwen Tang collection was also sold in these rooms, 12th November 2003, lot 90.
