Catalogue Note

Recent scholarship argues that a distinctive group of glass bottles was produced in Yangzhou for the Court between the 1767 construction of the Guyue Xuan Hall in the Qianlong emperor's Summer Palace and his death in 1799. Hugh Moss discusses several examples in 'Mysteries of the Ancient Moon', Journal of the International Chinese Snuff Bottle Society, Spring 2006, pp. 31-32.Yangzhou enamels are recognized to be generally thinner and applied in a more painterly manner than those on wares executed by the Beijing workshops. The base mark on bottles of this group are either of a Guyue xuan mark in seal script (as opposed to the regular script on Palace enamel-wares) or a Qianlong nianzhi mark in seal script, generally written in iron red in a straight line such as seen on the present example.
A very similar example from the Meriem Collection, was sold at Christie's New York, 19th September 2007, lot 690.
