Catalogue Note

The sensitive modelling of the relief, foliate border with enamel ground and refined finishing of the mane and edges relate the present medaillion to a group of roundels in the Louvre and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. These mounts were usually part of caskets and display a lively variety of fantastical animals and courtly scenes.
