Description
- Andreas Schelfhout
- Fisherfolk with beached vessels
- signed and dated A. Schelfhout / 45 lower left
- oil on panel
- 32 by 44cm., 12½ by 17¼in.
Provenance
Acquired by the present owner circa 2000
Condition
The panel is flat and even. UV light reveals a thin line of retouching circa 35cm running from the lower left edge to the boat at the far right edge (this appears to address an old surface scratch), and a handful of minor spots, notably in the sky. There are some small areas of fine craquelure in some of the white pigments of the clouds, notably to the lower left and upper centre, visible under close inspection. Apart from a varnish which has yellowed slightly with age, overall this work is in good condition.
Held in a decorative gold-painted wood and plaster frame.
The colours in the original are much richer and less pink overall than in the catalogue illustration.
