Provenance

Sale: Sloans & Kenyon, Maryland, 1978
Private Collection, USA (purchased at the above sale)
Acquired from the above by the present owner circa 2000

Condition

The canvas has been relined. UV light reveals some retouching, notably an area approximately 10 by 15cm in the sky above and to the left of the left-hand pyramid, and some scattered spots. There are a few small spots of paint flaking: in the sand in the lower left corner, below the central camel's neck, and above the shoulder of the right hand figure. The overall appearance of this work is good. Held in a decorative gold-painted wood and plaster frame, with foliate motifs.
