Catalogue Note

Painted in 1886, the present work anticipates Pasha's Lady in Gloves, dated 1889, for which he was awarded a prize at the 1889 Paris International Exhibition. The sitter for the 1889 painting (also known as Madam X) was almost certainly the painter's wife Aliye Hanim. It was praised by leading critics of the time for its 'sharp finish' and likened to the work of Henri Fantin-Latour (1836-1904).
