Catalogue Note

While this bowl is the only example known of this form and design, the inspiration may have come from earlier, Western Han period,  stemcups carved with a similar pattern of raised bosses and 'C' scrolls; for example see one illustrated in Zhongguo meishu quanji, vol. 9, Beijing, 1991, pl. 177, in the Museum of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region; and a covered cup, also with related carved decoration, pl. 197, from the Qing Court collection and still in the Palace Museum, Beijing.
