Catalogue Note

Finely fashioned in the form of three lychee fruits, the present amber carving is full of auspicious symbolism. The word lychee in Chinese is lizhi which is homophonous with the word 'to establish a son' which represents the wish to have descendants who continue the family line.

For other amber carvings of fruit, see one of naturalistic form depicting a finger citron sold in these rooms, 2nd May 1995, lot 222; a carving of a pomegranate branch, sold at Christie's London, 9th June 1980, lot 87; and a cluster of peaches, sold in our New York rooms, 9/10th October 1987, lot 121.
