Description

the rectangular slab of celadon tone with natural veins and inclusions, one side carved in low relief with four immortals standing on floating clouds, above two deities on a boat, sailing towards a balustered terrace with two further immortals, the reverse incised with an imperial poem in xingshu calligraphy by the Qianlong Emperor titled Yuzhi ti Mianyi Suichao tu ('Imperial inscription for the New Year Painting by Mianyi'), signed chen Yongxing jing shu ('Respectfully written by official Yongxing'), followed by two square seals reading chen and xing

Provenance

Acquired in Paris between the 1970s and the early 90s.

Condition

The edges have some old nicks and bruises, including a 0.8 x 0.5 cm chip to the bottom left corner. The overall condition is otherwise very good.

Catalogue Note

Yongxing (1752-1823) was the name of Prince Chengzhe, the 11th son of the Qianlong Emperor, and the younger brother of the Jiaqing Emperor.  He served in the military council and treasury of the Jiaqing court.  He was also a noted calligrapher.
