Catalogue Note
The design is rich in symbolism; the gourd and butterflies constitute a rebus for numerous descendants, gua die mian mian. The doubly auspicious design of a gourd-shaped vessel decorated with gourds was especially favored by potters at the Imperial kilns at Jingdezhen, see a Qianlong mark and period blue and white double-gourd vase decorated with trailing vines and bats illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Blue and White Porcelain with Underglazed Red (III), Shanghai, 2000, pl. 129.
A similarly decorated double-gourd vase with gilt-metal appliqués from the Collection of Iver Munthe Daae was sold Sotheby's London, July 12, 2006, lot 146 and subsequently at Christie's Hong Kong, May 27, 2009, lot 1947.
