Catalogue Note

The present table bears similarity to the work of George Bullock (b. 1777/78 – d. 1818) especially as it is made with burr maple and oak, indigenous materials favored by Bullock, as well as being inlaid with a foliate band to the top typical of his oeuvre.  The foliate band of fruiting laurels is similar if not almost identical to an inlaid brass banding found on a circular center table made by Bullock for the Duke of Atholl at Blair Castle, Perthshire, Scotland, in 1814. The design for the laurel banding can also be found in the Wilkinson Tracings, p. 137 (Wainwright et al, op. cit. p. 67)  Another table made by Bullock and purchased by the Earl of Wemyss at the Bullock sale in 1819 is similar to the present table in its overall form and in the use of burr figured wood as the ground with an ebony-inlaid foliate banding all on oak paw feet.  (ibid, p. 96)
