Catalogue Note

Sukran Moral has made herself an indispensible character on the contemporary Turkish art scene, pushing boundaries on her favoured subjects of the restrain, pressure and suppressive effect of religion on women.

Bordello, a photograph taken on the shoot of her most famous work is instantly recognised and has become one of the most important and influential video works in the canon of contemporary Turkish art. This photograph epitomises Moral's troubled upbringing when her family refused to allow her to continue her education after primary school, telling her it would turn her into a whore and instead she should stay at home and learn to cook, threatening her with the belief that if she did not work hard and succeed, she would end up in a brothel just like this. Moral was therefore for many years terrified of brothels and decided to go and examine this side of Istanbul to understand exactly from where her fear came.Turkey's bravest female artist has become a pioneer not only for her country but for women across the world.

Moral's video Bordello, shot in 1997 was included in the Dream and Reality: Modern & Contemporary Women Artists from Turkey exhibition at Istanbul Modern in 2011-2012.
