Condition

The work is in overall good condition. The canvas is not lined. The upper left, upper right, and lower right corners are slightly buckled. There are a few thin, stable webs of craquelure, notably in the center of the upper right quadrant and the center of the lower left quadrant. There are a few minor surface scuffs and associated surface losses and there is minor (barely visible) frame abrasion along the perimeter. Under Ultraviolet light inspection there is a fine line in the upper left quadrant that fluoresces darkly. Framed.

Catalogue Note

A Winter Recipe, dating from 1958, is a significant work from the artist's break out first solo exhibition in New York at the Contemporaries Gallery in 1960. The exhibition established the artist as an important voice in contemporary American art. Similar works from this exhibition include Fluorescent Compliment, 1960, purchased by Alfred F. Barr, Jr. for the Museum of Modern Art, Plus Reversed, 1960 acquired by James Michener and now part of the Michener Collection at the Blanton Museum of Art at the University of Texas in Austin and "Inner Red", 1959 purchased by Nelson Rockefeller and now in the collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art.

A Winter Recipe was reproduced on announcements for the show causing one critic to write that the work has the feeling of, "arriving in Oz, and having arrived as an artist… and nothing conveys both freshness and openness to outside space more than Anuszkiewicz shepherding his fledglings on rooftops in New York".  - Adam Anuszkiewicz
