Catalogue Note

"'The void is not silent ... I have always thought of it more and more as a transitional space, an in-between space. It's very much to do with time. I have always been interested as an artist in how one can somehow look again for that very first moment of creativity where everything is possible and nothing has actually happened. It's a space of becoming ... 'something' that dwells in the presence of the work ... that allows it or forces it not to be what it states it is in the first instance.'' - Anish Kapoor

Anish Kapoor is one of the most influential sculptors of his generation. Born in Mumbai, Kapoor’s body of work exists on the periphery of substantive corollaries such as void and substance, existence and absence and the solid and the intangible. Throughout Kapoor's sculptural career, his fascination with chiaroscuro is apparent, particularly in the present work which celebrates the translucent quality of the acrylic resin from which it is cast.  There is a tangible engagement between both the formidable form and levity within, touching on Kapoor’s longstanding ambition to evoke the sublime. To behold the present work is a sophisticated aesthetic experience wherein a three-dimensional object seemingly impossibly harnesses and suspends, a delicate moment in time.
