Condition
Colour:
The colours in the catalogue illustration are fairly accurate, although the yellow tends more towards ochre in the original.
Condition:
This work is in very good condition. All four edges are uneven. The canvas is attached to a backing board in several places on the reverse. There are scattered creases though out the work. These and all other surface irregularities are inherent to the artist's working process.

Catalogue Note
Rauch is both a dialectician and an absurdist. Using the resources of Modernism and Populist Realism against themselves, he constructs a dialectical fable of modern suffering, seen through the lens of East German suffering, with which he is personally familiar…he makes it unambiguously clear, by way of the ambiguity of his imagery, that the ostensible heroism of modern life is a façade on its emotional decadence.
