In this tightly contained jewel from 1960, the strongest elements of Ferron's work of this period are evident. Ferron had been living in Paris for close to ten years, and her work had started to receive full international recognition. Despite the institutional support of her work in Europe, Ferron remained true to the anti-establishment principles of the Automatistes and the Refus Global. This canvas has the rebellious spontaneity of palette-knife and of colour-play, Ferron's signature style by this time, both resolved within the limitations of the canvas surface. These constraints emphasize the aggressive energy of Ferron's painting style and clearly reflect the artist's emotional energy and expression. The broad swaths of paint dance around each other, colliding in exuberance and passion before careering off into new, unexplored territories.
