Catalogue Note

This dramatic drawing, influenced by Burne-Jones' study of Michelangelo, was probably made in 1877 when the artist produced a gouache version of The Call of Perseus, the first of the famous series of paintings depicting the story of the classical hero which had been commissioned by Arthur James Balfour to decorate the music room of his London mansion at 4 Carlton Gardens. The series of gouaches are at Southampton Art Gallery whilst the unfinished series in oils is at the Stuttgart Staatsgalerie.
