Catalogue Note

This watercolour made in 1874 is based upon a section of the contemporary oil painting The Picture Gallery (Towneley Hall Art Gallery & Museum, Burnley). The younger man was based upon the features of Charles Deschamps, the nephew of the owner of a celebrated earlier version of The Picture Gallery painted in 1873 (sold in these rooms, 8 June 1993, lot 31). Like his uncle, Deschamps was an art dealer as was Henry Wallis, who is probably also depicted in this watercolour.
