Condition

STRUCTURE The board appears to be sound. There are two small, vertical hairline cracks in the sky near the centre of the right edge, only visible upon close inspection. Two or three minor spots of surface dirt and the work may benefit from a light clean; otherwise appears in good overall condition. ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT UV light reveals areas of retouching in the lake and through the sky with an area of sweeping retouching above the peak of the mountain, some of which are visible to the naked eye. FRAME Held in a gilt plaster frame.

Catalogue Note

Looming in the hazy distance beyond Killary Bay is Mweelrea, the highest point in County Mayo. At the painting's exhibition in Belfast in 1923, the Northern Whig praised its 'dark purple hills and its high-piled clouds lit with a faint western light, which is also reflected in the strip of sea which runs up into the hills' (12 April 1923).

We are grateful to Dr S. B. Kennedy for his kind assistance with the cataloguing of the present work.
