Catalogue Note
Mary Swanzy's paintings during the Second World War were deeply personal, and often characterized by a dark and sorrowful mood. The Harvesters is no exception, and appears to mourn the loss of a bucolic way of life, felt more sharply against the horrors of modern war. Swanzy never explained her paintings fully, enjoying the mystery they held for their new owners, remarking, 'I'd very much like to know how the people who have them christened them, what they meant to them' (quoted in Una Lehane, The Irish Times, 29 March 1974).
