Catalogue Note

Lots 139 and 140 are exceptionally rare works created by Clarke for John Anster's limited edition translation of Goethe's Faust (1925), for which there were only 8 wash drawings and 8 colour plates. Both are to be illustrated in the new edition of The Life and Work of Harry Clarke, pp.255-6, by Nicola Gordon Bowe, for whose assistance with the cataloguing of the present works we are grateful.

'How heavenly Fair depicts Faust looking into a magic glass in the sordid squalor of the Witch's Kitchen, hung with hellish and amorphous specimens, and beholds, in contrast, the transcendent beauty of 'that reclining form' sent by Mephistopheles to tempt him.'
