Catalogue Note

During his first stay in Paris in 1894, Peploe enrolled for classes at the Académie Julian under the neo-classicist William Bouguereau and later at the Académie Calarossi. From 1901 he began a lifelong habit of taking painting trips to France. He moved permanently to Paris in 1910 until 1912. His experience in France liberated his palette. His open-air paintings are freer, dominated by the blue daylight and the intense colours of direct sunlight. This picture was probably painted c.1909.
