Catalogue Note
First edition of the first translation of the ancient Greek Old Testament into English. Charles Thomson (1729-1824), secretary to the Continental Congress (1774-1789), devoted himself to the Greek bible or Septuagint, an ancient translation from the original Hebrew, upon his retirement and this translation took 19 years to complete. Published by Jane Aitken, the first woman to print any part of the Bible in America, and the daughter of the printer Robert Aitken who printed the first English bible in America. The fourth volume contains Thomson’s translation of the New Testament.
