Catalogue Note

An extraordinary collection of ethnographic studies by the photographer Vladimir Barkanov (1826-1892) who traveled in the Caucasus in the 1860s gathering views of individuals and groups in native attire. The men are often shown with native weapons like kindjhals, rifles and pistols, women shown in a variety of head wear. Some groups are shown with musical instruments. Among the peoples depicted are Adjars, Armenians, Tatars and Lezgins. A series of six photos appear to show therapeutic massage.
