Catalogue Note

First edition, first issue, with the woodcut angel vignette on each title-page. This was a bestseller and influential work on Indian life. Lahontan, a French soldier serving in Canada, fought the Iroquois, commanded a frontier fort in present-day Michigan, and claimed to have ascended the Mississippi, though a stretch of the imagination — it was probably the Minnesota River.

This set contains the first edition of the Suite du Voyage which consist of dialogues with a North American Indian attacking Christianity. This work has been attributed to a defrocked priest Nicolas Guedeville.
