Description

of cylindrical doubled-walled form decorated with a turquoise glaze, the outer reticulated wall cut and carved with serrated openings resembling stepped pyramids, with slightly tapering internal bowl, the rim cut with serrations, flat base

Condition

In general good condition, abrasion across surface and consequential loss of glaze to most of body, including craquelure on surface, light iridescence, as viewed.

A glazed lantern in the al-Sabah Collection, Kuwait, of related style and technique, is tentatively attributed by Watson to "perhaps Iran, perhaps 8th century" (inv. no.LNS 511 C) and placed in the category 'Early [Islamic] "Green Glazed" Ware' (Watson 2004, p.163, Cat. Bb.3).
