Catalogue Note

The present tughra is an extraordinary calligraphic design which reads Tawakkaltu al-Allah, composed by famous Turkish painter Feyhaman Duran. Besides his career as a painter, specialising in portraits, Duran studied calligraphy in Istanbul before he was sent to Paris by Khedive Abbas Halim Pasha to work in the ateliers of the French masters. He returned to Istanbul in 1913 and was appointed professor of arts in the School of Fine Arts in 1919. He continued working on his paintings as well as his calligraphic works. The present rare tughra represents the transition from calligraphy to painting in the early years of the republican era and the skill of Duran in both of these arts.
