Catalogue Note
Isma'il Nefeszade
The present panel represents a rare work of Isma'il Nefeszade (d.1679). Celebrated as the second Sheikh, Nefeszade is regarded as the second founder of the school of Sheikh Hamdullah (d.1526) and was the calligraphy teacher of Hafiz Osman Effendi (d.1698), Sultan Mustafa II and Sultan Ahmed III. His mastery in copying the style of Sheikh Hamdullah was unparalleled and for this reason his works have been treasured by calligraphy lovers for centuries. A close relative of Nefeszade Ibrahim Effendi, the author of Mizan al-Khatt, Isma'il Effendi revived Sheikh Hamdullah's golden proportions of the seventeenth century. The present piece displays his mastery both in thuluth and naskh scripts.
