Description
- gilt-bronze
- each 69cm. high, 2ft. 3in.
in the manner of Filippo Pelagio Palagi (1775-1860), each in the form of a cherub supporting foliate cast branches, raised on rectangular plinth bases with front paw feet
Condition
Of impressive proportions and finely cast. The cornocopia of each from which the branches issue has been drilled for electric wire. However the branches and sconces themselves are not drilled. Each sconce lacks a drip pan. Some elements mis-shapen under very close inspection. The lyre held by one cherub lacks strings and the otghers are mis-shapen. The gilt-bronze is dirty but when these are cleaned, they will look spectacular.

Catalogue Note
For a comparative pair, which feature identical figural supports in the form of cherubs see Enrico Colle et al, Bronzi Decorativi In Italia, Milan, 2001, p. 359. This pair are in the Sala da Ballo at the Palazzo Reale, positioned in front of an impressive mirror with console ensuite. Interestingly the design of the mirror is ascribed to Pelagio Palagi. This mirror features a cornice with similar candle branches and supports to those on the offered pair of candelabra.
