Catalogue Note

Compare a similar dish but painted in underglaze blue and yellow enamels, formerly in the Weishaupt collection and illustrated in Gunhild Avitabile, From the Dragon's Treasure, Frankfurt, 1987, cat.no. 156, sold in our Amsterdam rooms, 16th October 1995, lot 62. Gunhild Avitabile, ibid., p. 109, suggests that these large and imposing Kangxi-inspired dishes marked Chuxiu gong zhi (Made for the Palace of Assembled Elegance) were probably made on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Dowager Empress Cixi for the newly renovated palace.
