Condition
This work is in very good condition. The sky and sea are lighter in colour and more blue than they appear in the catalogue illustration. The panel is sound. A close inspection reveals some old frame abrasion along the edges with associated small spots of paint-loss in the upper left and lower right corners. There is some vertical hairline shrinkage to the blue pigment in the left half of the composition (as visible in the catalogue illustration). Examination under UV light reveals a few tiny spots of retouching towards the upper and lower left corners and along the upper part of the right edge. The main composition is untouched but for two small spots of retouching in the sky, above and to the left of the smoke.
