Catalogue Note

La poignée - hautement symbolique - de ce très ancien sabre ballatu sebua de guerrier/notable représente la gueule ouverte du dragon-serpent Lasavra, dominée par une sculpture simiesque et démoniaque, dont les jambes dessinent un magnifique enroulement. Une boule, chargée de magie, faite de dents de phacochères et de vannerie, est fixée au fourreau taillé dans un bois dur. La patine, d'un noir dense et profond, atteste le long usage de ce sabre, qui devait apporter chance et protection au guerrier. Voir Feldman (1985, p. 66, n° 47) pour une photographie de 1906 où l'on distingue, suspendu à un autel, un sabre comparable ; et Modigliani (1890, p. 240, pl. VII a).
