Catalogue Note
Servant d’intermédiaire entre le devin et son client, qui ensemble le tiennent et le font glisser d’avant en arrière lors des séances de divination kashekesheke, ce petit instrument katatora orné d’une tête féminine répondait « aux questions au travers de mouvements impulsés par les ancêtres » (Nooter Roberts et Roberts, 2007, p. 132).
Son style, l’agencement de la coiffure, l’élégance et la sensibilité des traits, de même que la profonde patine d’usage aux nuances brun rouge l’apparentent très étroitement à l’instrument de divination de la collection Felix, ex-collection W.F.P. Burton, que ce missionnaire ethnographe avait photographié dans son contexte d’utilisation en 1927-35 (Nooter Roberts et Roberts, 1996, p. 184, ill. 164).
