Condition

The colours are fairly accurate in the catalogue illustration, although the image does not convey the texture of the painting. The work is executed on its original canvas, not relined. Are only visible under very close inspection : - few hairline cracks to the impasto -1 tiny loss of paint (approx. 0,1 cm) located 1 cm from the lower edge and 4 cm from the left edge - 1 minor loss of paint (approx. 0,2 cm) located 4,5 cm from the lower edge and 12,5 cm from the right edge Under UV light, there is no evidence of any retouching. This work is in excellent condition.

Catalogue Note

En janvier 1949 Nicolas de Staël part en Belgique et aux Pays-Bas s'imprégner des maîtres du Siècle d'Or. La Vallée d'Hercule Seghers est une révélation et de retour à Paris ils n'a de cesse de faire connaître cette oeuvre: paysage construit en plans horizontaux successifs et masses géométriques.
