Description

  • An Egyptian Indurated Limestone Head of a King
  • Limestone
  • Height 14 1/2 in. 36.9 cm.
probably Nectanebo I, from an over-lifesize figure of the king, with outlined lips, and wearing the Blue Crown with fragmentary uraeus.

Provenance

reportedly from the collection of King Farouk of Egypt (1920-1965)
Albert Eid (1866-1950), Cairo, inv. no. 594/350, recorded at his gallery in 1945
Walter Randel, New York
Margaret C. Johnson (1914-2012), New York, acquired from the above in March of 1962

Condition

As shown and described; the back of the head including the proper right ear is missing. The proper left ear and nose seem to have been chipped away in antiquity. The proper right side of the face and crown are somewhat more chipped than the left. The eyes and to a lesser extent the lips appear to have been somewhat re-cut or polished down.

Catalogue Note

The Walter Randel invoice dated March 2, 1962 mentions Albert Eid and reputedly King Farouk as the previous owners, and notes that, according to John Cooney of The Brooklyn Museum, the head "probably represents Nectanebo I, the first ruler of the XXX Dynasty."

In the Piero Tozzi Archive at the Onassis Library, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, is a 1940s photograph of the present head as it appeared on an inscribed wood base in Albert Eid's shop in Cairo. Under the heading Eid & Cie the caption reads: "Pierre blanche. Tête du Pharaon NECTANEBO? De la XXVIe. Dynastie 609-593 B.C. Haut. 39 cent. Enregistré sub no. 594 du livre contrôlé par le Service des Antiquités, le 24 Mai 1945."
