Catalogue Note

When the statue was in the Chrysler Collection it had a modern Republican-style portrait head, which has since been removed. The head is still visible in the 1989 Sotheby's sale catalogue photograph.

Clarac's engraving of a togatus formerly in the Doria-Pamphili Collection matches the present figure, albeit with a different head resembling a portrait of Titus. The engraving shows restored parts which have since disappeared, namely the right hand at rest and holding drapery folds, and several segments of drapery. The total height of the Doria-Pamphili statue, as given by Clarac ("7 palmes, 6 pouces") matches that of the present statue when it still had its Republican-style head (165 cm.). Clarac notes that the front of the left foot, the toes of the right foot, and part of the base were restored, as they indeed are on the present statue. The tall and tightly bound flaring bundle of scrolls is a highly unusual feature among togati, and yet another strong indicator that the Chrysler statue and the Doria-Pamphili figure are one and the same.
