Catalogue Note
For a very closely related statue of a youth leaning on a tree-trunk drilled for a waterspout see W. Amelung, Die Sculpturen des Vaticanischen Museums, vol. I, 1, Berlin, 1903, p. 56, no. 38B, pl. 5 (Comte de Clarac, Musée de sculpture antique et moderne, vol. III, Paris, 1850, pl. 407, no. 703; S. Reinach, Répertoire de la statuaire grecque et romaine, vol. I, Paris, 1906, p. 191, no. 1); this fountain figure is variously identified as Narcissus or Ganymede, and was found in 1800 in the caldarium of a bath building at Ostia, within a niche decorated with mosaic.
