Catalogue Note

The Istanbul Maritime Company was established in 1851 and, two years later, established a ferry service using six paddle steamers built by English shipbuilder Robert White. This bowl would appear to depict the introduction of these paddle steamers surrounded by the bemused sailing ships marginalised by modernity.
