Catalogue Note

This elegant tombak candlestick is of a form characteristic of the Ottoman tradition in this period. The almost flat drip tray and tall neck broken only along its length by one broad and one narrow moulding is typical of a group which were used to decorate Ottoman monuments of the sixteenth and seventeenth century (Allan and Raby 1982, p.46, no.33). The candleholder resembles the schematic form of a tulip head, another uniquely and iconic motif of Ottoman art.
